Hiker Responsibility
The safety of all hikers is of primary importance. We ask that hikers:
- Monitor weather a few days before the hike to determine the possible need to cancel.
- Monitor weather during the hike and, if needed, decide to return to trailhead for safety.
- Snacks provided at the discretion of the leader. Let the HikeMeister Coordinator know ahead of time if you want them to bring the box of tablecloths, napkins, utensils, etc for snacks.
- Practice “Leave No Trace” principles
Leader’s Rights and Responsibilities – 2025
- Hike leaders are asked to:
- Preview the hike to be familiar with trail map, current conditions, creek crossings, accurate directions to the trailhead etc. The Forest Service can provide trail updates.
- Choose a start time considering summer temperatures for front range hikes and need to finish by mid-day, 1:00 or so, at higher altitudes.
- Count the number of hikers in each group at the beginning and end of the hike and transfer this information to the HikeMeister Coordinator.
- Introduce yourself as leader and co-leaders then divide into 3, 5, 7 groups
- Ask for a volunteer ‘sweep’ for the end of each group.
- Both leader and sweep carry walkie talkies, review the use of walkie talkies.
- Check with hikers during the hike to determine if the pace and miles are ok, then adjust pace and rest/water breaks accordingly.
- Get signed releases from any guests and pass these on to the HikeMeister coordinators
- Be cognizant as leaders and don’t encourage / enable people to hike beyond their abilities
- Report any adverse events to the HikeMeister Coordinator
